I asked Beth to blog about balance. Does such a thing exist? Yes…and no. You see, there are also these things called seasons.
My role in ministry especially has always changed seasonally. That is due to needs of our family, jobs, becoming parents, my creative projects (if I was busy doing comedy or a show) etc. There’s this thing called LIFE. And it happens regardless of how busy or tired you are. So, some seasons are as smooth as your big toe during sandal season. (You know, cuz you shave it. Duh. And if you don’t, you need to.) Some seasons are just hairier than no-shave November.
So here’s what I’m learning about balance:
– Focus on Jesus.
All other noise fades when I’m listening for His Voice.
– Focus on what’s in your control.
This is the key from moving from surviving to thriving.
– Choose your battles.
You can’t win them all! Dave Ramsey, financial expert, talks about paying off smaller debts first so you get a sense of accomplishment from victory asap. Getting a “win” even as small as getting all of the socks folded can do wonders for your attitude.
– Ask for help.
I’ve been learning this the hard way. Stop floundering & call a friend. You’ll be relieved when you hear the words “been there”.
– Say “no”.
Saying “yes” to everything because you don’t want to let people down is noble but unrealistic. It will make you resentful and crazier than a bag of cats.
