This Mourning

Beth and I are talking about mourning this week as we continue looking at the Beatitudes.

I think it’s safe to say that each of us experiences loss. We have all lost loved ones. But what about other things we grieve? There are so many different types of loss. The loss of a job. A relationship. A dream. It all hurts.

I have a lot of things I’m passionate about. I used to not understand how I could be equally passionate about this vast array of creative expression, until a recent revelation – but you’ll have to buy my (future) book to find out about that. 😜

I had a dead dream. The past two years, I’ve tried to lay it to rest. I’ve worked hard to not let myself be bitter – but it was hard. Instead, I’ve worked diligently to focus on what I can do, and accept my role for the season of life I’m in. I wondered why God had me “benched”. Was I not faithful in the small things? Maybe I’m not good enough. I was mourning.

I heard Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild,  describe that voice in your head as “the voice of doom”. I’ll give you the edited version though. She said, “Everyone has that voice of doom in their head. So, you say to it ‘you’re always here, you’re always a jerk. Sit down and shut up.'” I LOL’d for real, but I thought about it. This is exactly what I’m going to say when the enemy whispers those negative thoughts to try and take advantage of my vulnerable state of mourning. But I found comfort in my Lord through the humor He gave me.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Then it happened. The dream was resurrected. It was given new life and new purpose. I begin a new job in September leading worship for elementary and middle school students as well as helping teachers as an aid.

God doesn’t have bench warmers. You will rise from the ashes of defeat. Find comfort that your Creator is working all things together for your Good.

Here’s a song I love called Resurrecting by Elevation Church.

The resurrected king is resurrecting me!

The head that once was crowned with thorns

Is crowned with glory now

The Savior knelt to wash our feet

Now at his feet we bow
The one who wore our sin and shame

Now robed in majesty

The radiance of perfect love

Now shines for all to see
Your name

Your name

Is victory

All praise

Will rise

To Christ our king

[x2]
The fear that held us now gives way

To him who is our peace

His final breath upon the cross

Is now alive in me
Your name

Your name

Is victory

All praise

Will rise

To Christ our king

[x2]
By Your spirit I will rise

From the ashes of defeat

The resurrected king

Is resurrecting me

In Your name I come alive

To declare your victory

The resurrected king

Is resurrecting me

[x3]
The tomb where soldiers watched in vain

Was borrowed for three days

His body there would not remain

Our God has robbed the grave

Our God has robbed the grave
Your name

Your name

Is victory

All praise

Will rise

To Christ our king

[x2]
By Your spirit I will rise

From the ashes of defeat

The resurrected king

Is resurrecting me

In your name I come alive

To declare Your victory

The resurrected king

Is resurrecting me

The resurrected king

Is resurrecting me
